Introduction to the VEX Robotics World Championship

VEX Robotics competitors design, build, fail, evaluate, redesign, rebuild, and compete again. The VEX Robotics World Championship is a celebration of teams that have demonstrated their success in using this project-based learning model through winning awards and by participating in online challenges, remote competitions, and in-person events. The VEX Robotics World Championship welcomes all kinds of teams, and invites them to celebrate and be inspired by teams and volunteers from around the world.

The VEX Robotics World Championship is the culminating tournament of the VEX Robotics competition season. Winning teams from around the world gather at a host venue to compete over the course of several days. When not competing, students have opportunities to watch other teams compete, visit sponsor and vendor booths, purchase exclusive souvenirs, and meet other teams from a diverse list of nations.

Teams qualify for the VEX Robotics World Championship by winning qualifying awards at championship events or Signature events. Winners of some Online Challenges also earn spots at the VEX Robotics World Championship.

The VEX Robotics World Championship is an amazing experience for the teams that attend. Students report that it “is life changing,” “is inspiring,” “made me want to work harder,” and “convinced me to pursue a STEM career.” While the REC Foundation works hard to make the state and regional championships memorable and special, we also understand teams love the VEX Robotics World Championship. They love to meet and compete with teams from around the world. They want to experience the “dome” with the amazing graphics and special effects. They want to see the best robots from the top programs compete, but they also want to get and give support from other programs that are more similar to theirs—to see that they belong.

“Just being at Worlds and seeing all the other teams is so much fun, because everyone there just loves robotics. It’s a great experience!” - Student on vexforum.com

The REC Foundation’s goal is for approximately 10% of teams to have the experience of attending the VEX Robotics World Championship each year. Our mission is to increase student interest and involvement in STEM by engaging students in hands-on, affordable, and sustainable robotics engineering programs—not to determine “the best robot.” To put the VEX Robotics World Championship experience in perspective, out of thousands of teams only a small handful will win. Every team that attends Worlds can meet teams from all over the world, celebrate the diversity that exists in this group of skilled students all meeting to compete in the same game, and enjoy the experience and all it has to offer.
